Healthy Teeth for Life

Tips for Families
  • Brushing teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and having regular check-ups with a dentist can help to keep your teeth healthy.
  • A healthy food is good for your teeth. What you eat and drink can cause tooth decay.
  • Limitation of sugar amount what you eat and drink is important to prevent tooth decay.
  • Drink one glass of fruit juice a day. Even unsweetened fruit juice is sugary, so try not to drink more than one glass of fruit juice each day.

What Causes Bad Breath?

Bad breath, also known as halitosis, is breath that has an unpleasant odour.

Bad breath can be caused by:

  • Poor dental hygiene — Infrequent or improper brushing and flossing can leave food particles to decay inside the mouth
  • Infections in the mouth — Periodontal (gum) disease
  • Respiratory tract infections — Throat infections, sinus infections, lung infections
  • External agents — Garlic, onions, coffee, cigarette smoking, chewing tobacco
  • Dry mouth (xerostomia) —This can be caused by salivary gland problems or by medications
  • Systemic illnesses — Diabetes, liver disease, kidney disease, lung disease, sinus disease, reflux disease and others
  • Psychiatric illness — Some people may perceive that they have bad breath, but it is not noticed by oral-health-care professionals or others. This is referred to as "pseudohalitosis."

Frequent Asked Questions

What Is the Right Way to Brush?

A: Proper brushing takes at least two minutes. To get a feel for the time involved, try using a stopwatch. To properly brush your teeth, use short, gentle strokes, paying extra attention to the gumline, hard-to-reach back teeth and areas around fillings, crowns or other restoration. Concentrate on thoroughly cleaning each section as follows:
  • - Clean the outer surfaces of your upper teeth, then your lower teeth
  • - Clean the inner surfaces of your upper teeth, then your lower teeth
  • - Clean the chewing surfaces
  • - For fresher breath, be sure to brush your tongue, too

What is the Right Way to Floss?

A: Proper flossing removes plaque and food particles in places where a toothbrush cannot easily reach — under the gumline and between your teeth. Because plaque build-up can lead to tooth decay and gum disease, daily flossing is highly recommended. To receive maximum benefits from flossing, use the following proper technique:
  • - Starting with about 18 inches of floss, wind most of the floss around each middle finger, leaving an inch or two of floss to work with
  • - HoldinHolding the floss tightly between your thumbs and index fingers, slide it gently up-and-down between your teeth
  • - Gently curve the floss around the base of each tooth, making sure you go beneath the gumline. Never snap or force the floss, as this may cut or bruise delicate gum tissue
  • - Use clean sections of floss as you move from tooth to tooth
  • - To remove the floss, use the same back-and-forth motion to bring the floss up and away from the teeth
